Mrs. Tonia Mathews has been teaching in the Austin Independent School District for 26 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Master’s Degree in Music Education at Texas State University. Her early teaching career began in the Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District, WI as the instrumental instructor for grades 5 and 6 and then as Associate Director at Clark Middle School in Laredo, TX. When she moved to Austin, she was hired as the Associate Band Director for Johnston High School where she remained for three years.
Her high school experience continued in a position for nine years at Austin High School. There she was the Director of Jazz Studies and Wind Ensemble in addition to assisting with the marching band. Mrs. Mathews led the jazz program to be one of the most successful in the district and nation winning numerous awards at state festivals and placing more students in region jazz and all-state jazz than any other school in the Austin area. In the spring of 2008, the Austin High Jazz Ensemble was chosen as one of the top 15 jazz bands in the nation to perform for the prestigious Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City where Wynton Marsalis was one of the judges.
Tonia is in her 15th year of Director of Bands at Clint Small Middle School continuing it's high level of music performance success with Superior ratings at Band and Jazz Festivals. In 2013 the Clint Small Wind Ensemble under her direction was a National Wind Band Winner of the Mark of Excellence Award. The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras. She is a member of the Texas Jazz Educator’s Association and the Texas Music Educator’s Association.

Alan DeVall is in his 8th year as a band director at Small MS. He is a native of Gresham, OR, holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Florida State University and a Master of Music and Human Learning degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Before moving to Austin with his wife Michelle, he was the Director of Bands at North Fort Myers High School in Southwest Florida from 2010-2014. Under his direction, the band program experienced tremendous growth from 120 to 190 members. Each of the three concert bands, two jazz bands and the marching band consistently earned the highest ratings at music performance assessments, and made frequent out-of-state trips. While completing his graduate studies, he taught private trombone lessons and instructed the marching band at Rouse High School and Wiley Middle School in Leander, TX.
In addition to his position at Small MS, Alan does administrative work and helped to found the Texas Youth Wind Symphony, the premier youth wind symphony for students across Central Texas. He is a technician with the Austin High School Band. He was also a proud member of the Santa Clara Vanguard and Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps.

Bryant Anderson is originally from San Antonio, Texas. He recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in music studies and a minor in arts management and administration. During his time at UT, he studied saxophone with Dr. Stephen Page and had the opportunity to perform in groups such as the UT Wind Ensemble, UT Symphony Orchestra, and the famous Longhorn Band. Bryant is also a huge proponent of chamber music, having played in and competed with various saxophone quartets since his sophomore year at Ronald Reagan High School in North East ISD. Previously, Bryant worked as a marching technician for Westwood High School in Round Rock ISD and as an education intern for the Austin Chamber Music Center. He looks forward to his third year working with the amazing team and students at Small Middle School!
