Mrs. Tonia Mathews has been teaching in the Austin Independent School District for 29 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Master’s Degree in Music Education at Texas State University. Her early teaching career began in the Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District, WI as the instrumental instructor for grades 5 and 6 and then as Associate Director at Clark Middle School in Laredo, TX. When she moved to Austin, she was hired as the Associate Band Director for Johnston High School where she remained for three years.
Her high school experience continued in a position for nine years at Austin High School. There she was the Director of Jazz Studies and Wind Ensemble in addition to assisting with the marching band. Mrs. Mathews led the jazz program to be one of the most successful in the district and nation winning numerous awards at state festivals and placing more students in region jazz and all-state jazz than any other school in the Austin area. In the spring of 2008, the Austin High Jazz Ensemble was chosen as one of the top 15 jazz bands in the nation to perform for the prestigious Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City where Wynton Marsalis was one of the judges.
Tonia is in her 17th year of Director of Bands at Clint Small Middle School continuing it's high level of music performance success with Superior ratings at Band and Jazz Festivals. The 2023 Clint Small Jazz Ensemble and the 2013 Clint Small Wind Ensemble under her direction were selected as the National Wind Band Winners of the Mark of Excellence Award. The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras. She is a member of the Texas Jazz Educator’s Association and the Texas Music Educator’s Association.
Her son is a proud member of the Austin High Maroon Band and Jazz Ensemble. She also has two cats, Isla and Pepper.

Elaina Walzel is excited to join the band program at Clint Small Middle School and return to Austin ISD! She earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Texas State University and her Master of Music in Bassoon Performance from the University of Oklahoma. Ms. Walzel recently completed her fourth year of teaching. She spent the past two years as a band director at Lockhart Junior High School after previously teaching music at Patton Elementary. She loves helping students discover their potential through music and believes that band is a place where students can build confidence, develop lifelong friendships, and create memories that last well beyond middle school.
Ms. Walzel also serves as an active bassoonist and has performed with Yandel, the Air Force Band of the West, the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra, the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, and the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.
When she’s not teaching or performing, you’ll likely find her exploring the outdoors or spending time with her cat, Sophie. Ms. Walzel is thrilled to become part of the Clint Small community and looks forward to making music with her students and their families this school year.

Bailey Moss is thrilled to serve as your next Assistant Band Director this school year! She is entering her second year of music education after teaching one year of general music. In addition, she served on staff for many High School Marching Band programs, and taught trumpet lessons across Central Texas. She completed her student teaching in Leander ISD.
Ms.Moss is a native of San Antonio, Texas and received her BM in Music Studies with honors from Texas State University in the Spring of 2025. While studying trumpet under Dr. Keith Winking and Dr. Bob Cannon, she was a member of the Concert, Jazz, and Athletic Ensembles, as well as President and Treasurer of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity, and trumpet Section Leader for the Bobcat Marching Band (Eat ‘Em Up!). Upon graduation, Ms.Moss was a recipient of the Collegiate Music Educators Award from the Texas Music Educators Association, and currently a member of the Texas Music Educators Association.
Ms.Moss currently performs on the Trumpet with Cedar Park Winds and Austin, Texas’ only All-Female Mariachi group, Mariachi Chicana. Ms.Moss enjoys reading, exploring hiking trails, drinking Matcha Lattes, and spending time with her incredible fiancé, Timothy, and their two fluffy cats, Gigi and Kyo.
She will be teaching Beginning Trumpet, Low Brass, Percussion, Symphonic band, and Jazz 2.
